The BBC announced on Sunday that Ncuti Gatwa will be the 14th actor to play Doctor Who in the lead role. (No, he’s not the 14th Doctor depending on how you count because there was the War Doctor, and now the Doctor is the Time Child… you know what… Time Travel. That’s all you need to know.)

Doctor Who launched on the BBC in 1963 and ran until 1989. The series relaunched in 2005 to critical and fan success and continues on now. The actors to play the Doctor so far include William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy in the original BBC years. Paul McGann played the Eighth Doctor in an attempted U.S. series on the Fox network. When the series relaunched the Doctor has been played by Christopher Eccleston (Season 1), David Tennant (Seasons 2-4), Matt Smith (Seasons 5-7), Peter Capaldi (Seasons 8-10), and most recently by Jodie Whittaker (Seasons 11-13), who was the first female Doctor.

Gatwa is best-known for his role of Eric Effiong on Sex Education.

Whittaker has one more special episode set to air this year which will feature her regeneration into Gatwa’s form. No word as of yet as to when his first full episode will air. The presumption would be some time in 2023.
