At long last, Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo comic will be getting its own animated series.
Usagi Yojimbo has been one of the most successful small press comics since it launched in 1984. Despite some time playing around with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Usagi has never had his own animated series, but all of that is about to change.
Netflix has ordered Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles which will follow a teenage Rabbit Samurai Yuichi, a descendant of the great Miyamoto Usagi. He is now on a quest to become a samurai in his own right while leading his team of a roguish bounty hunter, a ninja, a pickpocket, and his pet lizard.
Sakai will serve as an executive producer along with Gaumont, Dark Horse Entertainment and Atomic Monster. Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, and Chris Tongue along with Atomic Monster’s Hames Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett will also executive produce.
No timeline was announced for the launch of the series.
