Deadwood Movie Officially Greenlit at HBO

After years of rumors and false starts, HBO has officially announced that the Deadwood movie is happening. The announcement was made by HBO Programming president Casey Bloys speaking at the TCA summer press tour on Wednesday morning.

“All of these people worked hard to get this together,” Bloys said according to Variety. “It’s been a logistics nightmare getting all the cast members’ schedules together but we are there. It is greenlit.”

The Deadwood movie is currently scheduled to begin filming in October of this year with a release date tentatively scheduled for some time in 2019. Bloys did make it clear that the release date is not “set in stone” at this time.

No word yet on who all will be returning, but one would find it hard to fathom without certain key players such as Ian McShane (Al Swearengen) and Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock) returning. There are many more key players, of course, but without either of those two, it just wouldn’t be Deadwood.

For those unfamiliar with the series, it ran for three seasons on HBO from 2004 to 2006. It was left with a bit of a cliffhanger which has led to fans demanding a wrap-up story of some form ever since.

While it’s nice to see HBO saying it’s finally happening, until we actually see it on our TV screen we’re doing to remain at least somewhat skeptical.
