According to Deadline, Amazon has ordered a reboot of the reality competition series American Gladiators. The new project is the product of MGM Alternative and Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video in association with Flor-Jon Films, the production company of American Gladiators series creator Johnny C. Ferraro. He will also serve as executive producer on the series.

The original series ran from 1989 to 1996 in syndication. It was revived by NBC in 2008, and it ran for two seasons. There was an attempted revival in 2018 from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and another in 2021 with MGM and WWE teaming up for the series.

The property has enjoyed renewed interest with two documentaries having recently been released about the original series. The property has also been revived in the UK and has found success with a seasoned season quickly having been ordered.

“Gladiators is an enduring, physical challenge format that continues to engage families around the world,” Lauren Anderson, head, Brand and Content Innovation, Amazon MGM Studios, told Deadline. “We look forward to delighting our global Prime Video customers with both reimagined and nostalgic elements that celebrate the best of the original series.”

“Doing a cross-country casting search is exciting for us, and for the fans. Our goal is to find a real cross-section of America’s fittest and fiercest competitors. This is the ultimate in sports entertainment,” said Barry Poznick, general manager MGM Alternative, Evolution Media and Big Fish Entertainment.

No word as of yet as to a potential debut date.
