A Different World sequel series is reportedly in the works at Netflix that would follow Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter at Hillman College.

According to Deadline, Netflix has tapped Felicia Pride (Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy) to write and executive produce the project. No casting has occurred as of yet, but sources say that conversations have begun with original cast members about their possible involvement with the project. Reportedly the response has been positive.

The original series launched in 1987 as a spinoff to The Cosby Show and followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) attending the fictional Hillman College. Bonet left the series after one season leading to a massive change in the show’s premise. It then followed the budding romance between Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). The series ended in 1993 with the newly married couple learning they were pregnant with their first child and also heading off to Japan for Wayne’s work.

The new series would follow the couple’s youngest daughter as she begins attending Hillman College.

The concept of this series may sound somewhat familiar, as That 90s Show – a follow-up to That 70s Show – is also a story about the main character’s daughter, who ends up in the same place her parents were for the original series.

Netflix is offering no comment on the potential series at this time.
