The CW continues to find its new voice going forward, which means no ‘back 9’ orders for The Winchesters & Walker: Independence this year.

The CW has opted not to pick up what is known as the ‘back 9’ episodes for the first seasons of The Winchesters & Walker: Independence. When most TV shows are ordered for a season, it only covers their first 13 episodes. A decision is later made if the ‘back 9’ should be picked up to bring the total for the season to 22.
According to Deadline, this concept will go across all of the network’s freshman series this year. New network head Dennis Miller has reportedly assured showrunners that this does not mean they are canceled, and that those decisions will come later. For now, network owner Nexstar is just trying to figure out what the exact plans are moving forward.
The CW is ending four major shows this season with The Flash, Nancy Drew, Riverdale, and Stargirl all coming to an end. It is clear that Nexstar will be taking the network in a new direction beginning next season and will be looking to cut down on expensive dramas. What returns remains to be seen, but expect a very different-looking CW show lineup in the not-too-distant future.
