Toei is doing something it has rarely done before: Going into full nostalgia mode with the Super Sentai franchise.

Toei recently announced two reunion movies will be made for different seasons of the Super Sentai series. Generally, the series is treated as very disposable with a new season starting the week after the previous one ends. There will then be a crossover between those two teams and then move on. Over the years there have been chances to honor previous seasons, but full reunion movies are a new twist.

Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger – which was the basis of Power Rangers Ninja Storm – ran from Feb. 17, 2002 to Feb. 9, 2003. It will receive a movie in Summer 2023 called Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger de Gozaru! Shushutto 20th Anniversary. The film will see all five original Japanese actors returning to their roles, and they will be traveling back in time to the Edo Period of Japan.

Bakuryu Sentai AbaRange – the basis of Power Rangers Dino Thunder – ran from Feb. 16, 2003 to Feb. 8, 2004. Its reunion fill will see the original Japanese Ranger actors return for, Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger 20th: Unforgivable Abare. This film will receive a theatrical release in 2023 and then hit home video on March 27, 2024 in Japan.

There is very little chance of these films ever being released in the U.S. as follow-ups to the U.S. seasons, but it’s still nice to know this sort of thing is happening. Power Rangers in the U.S. are hitting their 30th anniversary and will be doing some salutes to past teams on the upcoming Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury.
