It seems there’s more story to tell when it comes to the Planet of the Apes series. 20th Century Studios announced on Thursday that it is moving forward with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The new film will continue the previous series – Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes – and will pick up many years after the last film.

Freya Allan (The Witcher) has been cast as the lead human of the film, while Owen Teague will be playing the lead ape.

Wes Ball (Maze Runner) will be directing from a script by Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison. Joe Hartwick Jr., Jason Reed, Jaffa, and Silver will serve as producers, while Pater Chernin and Jenno Topping will serve as executive producers.

Planet of the Apes is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio’s legacy. With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes we are privileged to continue the series’ tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema, and can’t wait to share Wes’ extraordinary vision for this new chapter with audiences in 2024,” Steve Asbell, President of 20th Century Studios, said in a statement.

As we saw at the end of War for the Planet of the Apes, humans were beginning to lose their ability to speak and reason, so it will be interesting to say where the world is at this point. Judging by the concept art that was released, the world has seen better days.
