According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and HBO Max are looking to build a new universe of TV spinoffs based on Robert Downey Jr.’s two Sherlock Holmes films. Two series are being developed in conjunction with Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. They will be joined by Amanda Burrell from their team along with Wigram Productions’ Lionel Wigram who produced the two films in the series.
There are two series reportedly in development and each will center around characters that were not introduced in the films. They will supposedly be a part of the proposed third film which has been delayed multiple times due to the pandemic, and the fate of the shows rests on the film being made.
Downey starred with Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes in 2009, and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows in 2011. Both films were directed by Guy Ritchie, but he will be replaced on the planned third film by Dexter Fletcher.
The third film was originally planned for a Dec. 2020 release, but was delayed to Dec. 2021. The film does not currently have a release date, but both Fletcher and Downey say they are committed to making the film.
Warner Bros. is taking an aggressive approach to TV spinoffs from its films. Peacemaker came from The Suicide Squad with two more possible series in development. The Batman has a spinoff based on Arkham Asylum on the way as well as one about the Penguin.
