Once again, a network is setting its eyes on a reboot of the 1970s David Carradine martial arts series, Kung-Fu. This time the project has landed at The CW.
In the new take on the series, a Chinese-American woman will go through a quarter-life crisis and go in search of herself. This leads her to a monastery in China where she learns martial arts and Shaolin values. When she comes back, she finds her city overrun with crime and corruption and will put what she learned to work. At the same time she will be hunting for the assassin who killed her master and is now also targeting her.
The series is being spearheaded by Christina M. Kim and Martin Gero with Greg Berlanti & Sarah Schechter set to be executive producers. Should this series move forward, it will just be Berlanti’s latest series for The CW with his company already producing all of the superhero shows as well as Riverdale, the upcoming Katy Keene, and more.
This is the third attempt in recent memory of a reboot of Kung-Fu being attempted. The two previous ones were both over at Fox with Berlanti behind them, and also with female leads, but those projects never made it to pilots.
With Berlanti’s current track record with The CW, the third time may indeed be the charm.
