It appears that Paramount Pictures has given up the ghost on Star Trek 4.
On Tuesday it was announced that SJ Clarkson will be directing and executive producing the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series for HBO. This only became possible because her previous commitment to direct Star Trek 4 fell through.
The current Star Trek films were kicked off by J.J. Abrams and arrived to great fanfare. The second and third films, however, did not live up the highs of the first film. The plan was for the fourth film to tie up the series and have Kirk (Chris Pine) meet his father (Chris Hemsworth) thanks to time travel. Back in August, however, both of them reportedly walked away from the negotiations for the film.
There was some hope that the film could still come together, but with the release of Clarkson from her commitments to the production, it seems that the project is indeed dead.
With the launch of the various shows such as Star Trek Discovery on CBS All Access, it may indeed be time to put the films to rest for a spell. Even diehard fans were starting to get confused about the continuity of all the properties due to the films having split off into their own timeline. Even though there is a new Picard series on the way, the films will indeed factor in as Picard (Patrick Stewart) will be the first character to deal with the aftermath of the destruction of the Romulan homeworld, Romulus.
Maybe someday the timeline will make some sort of sense again, but for now it seems things are still a bit off kilter.
