We’re heading back into the Alien universe with a new film due to begin filming in February.

Currently entitled Alien: Romulus – no information if that is the working title or final name – the new film is due to begin filming on Feb. 6, 2023 in Budapest, Hungary. Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) is directing from his own screenplay written with Rodo Sayagues. Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim: Uprising) is set to star.

Ridley Scott will serve as a producer via his Scott Free production company.

It is unknown where in the Alien timeline this film sits, but it will be the first new film in the series since Alien: Covenant in 2017. The story was reportedly pitched by Alvarez to Scott some years ago, and it stuck with Scott enough for him to finally look into working on it.

The last two films – Prometheus and the aforementioned Covenant – took the series in unexpected directions as they served as prequels to the original Alien. Both films received mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, and seemed unlikely to receive another film. However, with a sub-title such as ‘Romulus,’ who was the founder and first king of Rome, we do have to wonder if that is the same storyline we’ll be dealing with.

Currently, the film is planned to be released exclusively on Hulu, just as the latest Predator film, Prey, was.

With filming beginning in the early part of 2023, we imagine this film will be released sometime in 2024.
