Minecraft builds its way to the top spot at the box office

Every so often you see a film blow through projections, but Minecraft just blew the doors off of everything.

Projections for A Minecraft Movie were pegged at $60M. Most people, up until Thursday, thought it wasn’t going to beat that number, but no one saw $157M as the final number. It now stands as the largest opening ever for a video game adaptation, beating the previous champion, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which opened to $146.36M. Minecraft took in a further $144M in the foreign markets for a global opening of $301M.

A Working Man landed in second place with $7.27M for a new domestic total of $27.81M. It has taken in a further $16.56M at the foreign box office for a global total of $44.38M.

Third place went to The Chosen: Last Supper — Part 2 with $6.7M.

Snow White landed in fourth place with $8.08M for a new domestic total of $77.46M. It has taken in a further $75.82M in the foreign markets for a global total of $153.28M.

Fifth place went to The Woman in the Yard with $4.5M for a new domestic total of $16.66M. It has taken in $438K overseas for a global total of $17.1M.

The wide releases this week are The Chosen: Last Supper — Part 3, The Amateur, Drop, The King of Kings, and Warfare.
