As Marvel Studios works to catch up on its delayed film schedule, the time has finally arrived for the first Eternals trailer. Directed by Chloé Zhao, who recently won the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for her 2020 film Nomadland, the film stands to potentially launch a new series of team films.
In the comics, the Eternals are a race of people created by the Celestials around one million years ago. Each was gifted with long life and unique cosmic power. For the most part, the Eternals don’t intervene with the progress of life, but every once in a while they may give it a nudge.
When the Eternals were created, however, not all of the transformations went well and this gave rise to the genetically unstable and dangerous Deviants. The film will follow the Eternals protecting humankind from their less benevolent relations.
And if the term “Celestial” sounds familiar, we first saw them introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy. Knowhere – the place the team met up with the Collector – was really the severed head of a Celestial.
The film has a gigantic cast with Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, and Salma Hayek as Ajak. This film will also introduce Kit Hattington as Dan Whitman, better known as the Black Knight.
No word yet on how many films this cast has signed on for, but we’re sure Marvel Studios have some big plans when they’ve assembled this much talent.
Eternals will hit theaters on Nov. 5, 2021.
