Disney is wasting no time and is in early development on a Cruella sequel as the film only has two weeks of results under its belt.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is already working on the follow-up to the original story of Cruella de Vil. Both director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for the second outing. Emma Stone is also expected to return in the titular role.
“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney Plus Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”
Cruella is wrapping up its second weekend at the box office with $11.24M domestically for a new total of $43.68M. Globally it sits at $87.08M The budget is rumored to have been around $200M, which normally would mean a $400M gross would be needed to break even, but all movie math is currently skewed due to day-and-date streaming releases. Disney keeps 100% of the revenue generated from Disney Plus, but only 50% of the money from the domestic box office. There’s just no way to tell if Disney is being overly optimistic, if the movie has broken even, or if it’s already into profit.
For now, just know Disney is happy with the film’s performance and we will probably be set to learn a little bit more about Cruella.
