How to Play Kick the Can: Rules and Setup Guide

by Sean P. Aune | May 19, 2026May 19, 2026 10:30 am EDT

Kick the Can is a classic outdoor game that combines elements of tag and hide and seek. One player guards a can while the rest hide and try to avoid being caught. The goal for the hidden players is to free captured teammates by kicking the can, while the guard tries to find and capture everyone. Here is how to play.

Materials You Need

  • One empty can, ball, or small object
  • An outdoor space with places to hide
  • Five or more players

Setting Up the Game

Choose a central location where the can will be placed. This is the home base.

Select one player to be “It.” All other players are hiders.

How the Game Works

Starting the Round

The player who is It places the can at the home base and closes their eyes while counting to an agreed number, such as 20 or 30.

While counting, all other players hide within the designated play area.

Seeking and Capturing

After counting, the player who is It begins searching for the hidden players.

If It spots a player, they must:

  • Run back to the can.
  • Touch or guard the can.
  • Call out the player’s name and hiding spot.

The spotted player is then considered captured and goes to a designated holding area near the can.

Freeing Captured Players

Hidden players may attempt to sneak back to the can and kick it.

If a player successfully kicks the can before being tagged:

  • All captured players are freed.
  • The can is reset to the home base.
  • The player who is It must recover the can and continue searching.

Getting Tagged

If It tags a player before they reach the can, that player is captured and sent to the holding area.

Winning the Game

The round ends when all players have been captured without the can being kicked.

The first player captured becomes It for the next round.

Important Rules to Remember

  • The can must remain at the home base unless kicked.
  • Captured players must stay in the holding area until freed.
  • Players must stay within the agreed boundaries.
  • The guard must identify players clearly when capturing them.

Optional Variations

  • Play at dusk or nighttime for added difficulty.
  • Allow multiple players to be It for larger groups.
  • Use a ball instead of a can for safety.
  • Set a time limit for each round.

Best Age Range

Kick the Can works best for ages 7 and up. Younger players can join with smaller play areas and simpler rules.

Tips for Playing Kick the Can

  • Choose a play area with safe hiding spots.
  • Make sure all players understand boundaries.
  • Encourage teamwork when attempting rescues.
  • Keep rounds moving to maintain energy.
  • Use a visible object for the can so it is easy to find.
