Moviegoers cautious about returning to theaters in the U.S.

Movie studios are still trying to figure out how to get film exhibition rolling again, but it seems audiences aren’t quite ready to head back just yet.

Reportedly, the film studios will make a decision during the week of July 6 about whether or not to push films such as Mulan and Tenet back once again. Apparently, the studios are talking about moving back two weeks at a time with continuous analysis between each move to decide if further action is needed.

A new Hollywood Reporter/Morning Consult poll was conducted between June 26 and June 29 and surveyed 2,200 people. The results were less than promising for the movie industry.

According to the study, 15% of respondents are either very or somewhat likely to return to theaters as soon as they open. That number increases to 18% within two weeks, to 26% in one month, and 35% for any time in 2020.

At the longer range, 55% are in the somewhat or very unlikely category.

The overall results do improve if masks are required by theaters seeing as many as 60% saying they would consider returning to the theaters.

With films such as Mulan and Tenet costing over $200M in budget alone, this is not a good result for the studios.

With Coronavirus cases currently surging across the U.S., we fully expect Disney and Warner Bros. to announce further delays this next week, but it also feels like those won’t be the end.
