After months of rumors and speculation, Lucasfilm announced on Monday that Taika Waititi will co-write and direct a new Star Wars film.
Fresh off his Oscar win for Jojo Rabbit, Waititi will now be traveling to a galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm took the opportunity of May the 4th Be With You to make the announcement. Joining him on writing duties is Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917).
There is no indication as of yet as to when the story will be set. Also unknown at this time is when the film is scheduled for release. Waititi is currently signed on to writing and directing Thor: Love and Thunder which is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 11, 2022. One would suspect his Star Wars project to more than likely target Dec. 2023 or possibly even later.
This will mark Waititi’s second Star Wars outing having played IG-11 in The Mandalorian series as well as directing the season 1 finale.
