The coronavirus pandemic has had another unexpected impact on the world of movies. Bloodshot will be hitting digital release just 11 days after it hit theaters.
The movie adaptation of the Valiant Comics series Bloodshot hit theaters on Friday, March 13. With theaters closing all around the world, Sony Pictures is stuck an odd position as the film was already released, and there’s really no way to hold it over to when theaters reopen.
In response to this unique situation, the studio is releasing Bloodshot to digital on March 24.
“Sony Pictures is firmly committed to theatrical exhibition and we support windowing,” said Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group. “This is a unique and exceedingly rare circumstance where theaters have been required to close nationwide for the greater good and ‘Bloodshot’ is abruptly unavailable in any medium. Audiences will now have the chance to own ‘Bloodshot’ right away and see it at home, where we are all spending more time. We are confident that — like other businesses hit hard by the virus — movie theaters will bounce back strongly, and we will be there to support them.”
This is the quickest turnaround we’ve seen so far. Birds of Prey is coming out on March 24 as well, but that is 38 days since it hit theaters. Once theaters reopen we’re sure to return to the normal 90-day release window.
