The Summer Olympics shifted viewing habits in August, with Peacock enjoying a successful month and the broadcast picking up some steam.

Broadcast TV took a bit of its share back in August, thanks to the Summer Olympics. In July, streaming hit a record percentage of 41.4% to broadcast TVs 20.3%. In August streaming slid back slightly to 41% and broadcast grew to 22%. Cable slid back .4%, while “other” dropped .9%.
Peacock saw a bump in viewership from 1.5% to 2.1%, which is unsurprising since it was the home of the Olympics. Other services seeing a bump were Roku Channel up .1%, Disney Plus up .2%, and YouTube up .2%.
The services seeing decreases were Max down .1%, Tubi down .3%, Hulu down .3%, and Netflix down .5%.
One of the clearest issues still emerging from all of the shifts this month are that Paramount Plus and Max have to find a way to increase market share. Combined, the two services only came up to 2.4% this month, and while that doesn’t seem that soft, you have to factor in what both services are spending on original content. There have been rumors that both of them are speaking with Peacock about a potential merger, but no official word has come out about that as of yet.
It’s clear TV consumption habits are changing at a rapid pace, and there won’t be a clear winning delivery method for some time to come.
