It looks as though the Power Rangers may yet morph again as a new series is reportedly in the works at Disney Plus.

Hasbro has reportedly struck a deal with Disney for a new Power Rangers series that will be exclusive to Disney Plus. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the showrunners on Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, are said to be in talks to showrun and produce the new series from 20th Century TV

This is a bit of deja vu for Power Rangers fans. Saban Entertainment ran the property from 1993 to 2001 before selling it Fox Family Worldwide. Disney then purchased that company and produced multiple seasons under their brand. Haim Saban then bought the rights back in 2011 to go on to sell them in 2021 to Hasbro.

Hasbro then oversaw new episodes released on Netflix until 2023. After two years of development on a new take on the series for Netflix, the project was abandoned.

The project was being headed up by Supernatural story editor Jenny Klein as showrunner before it was killed.

What this new project holds for the franchise is unknown. Hasbro has leaned away from using footage from the Japanese Super Sentai series, something that has been a hallmark of the franchise since it first launched. With Playmates currently producing toys based on Mighty Motphin Power Rangers – the first iteration of the property – one has to suspect this may be a return to those original stories.

Only time will tell what this new take on Power Rangers will be like, but fans are certainly anxious for it to return.
