Baywatch remake still moving forward at Fox

A Baywatch remake has been in development at Fox since Spring 2024, but despite the quiet nature of the project, it appears the series is still moving forward.

The Baywatch remake received a ‘script plus penalty’ commitment last Spring, but not much has happened since then. Burn Notice creator Matt Nix was brought in a few months ago for rewrites, and then things went silent again.

Deadline has provided a new update that Fremantle – which owns the rights to the original series – is still in development on the series, and that the project is still at Fox. Interest in the project is even said to be increasing with the new distribution deals of the original series following a cleanup of the original episodes.

The original Baywatch ran on NBC for one season in 1989 before moving to syndication where it ran for an additional 10 seasons. The series went on to spin off Baywatch Nights, and the original series was the most-watched series in the world at one point, thanks to international deals.

With the cancelation of Rescue: HI-Surf this season, one has to wonder just how eager Fox would be to five back into the world of a beach-based series. Baywatch does have the bonus of being a recognized brand which may end up giving it a better chance at success.

No word as of yet when Baywatch may debut.
