It’s time to head back to the beach as a Baywatch remake is in the works at Fox.

Fox has given a ‘script plus penalty’ commitment to a revival of Baywatch. In short, that means the network is very dedicated to this project.
Setup as a co-production with Fremantle, Lara Olsen has been tapped as the showrunner. She will also serve as an executive producer alongside original series creators, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and Doug Schwartz.
The original Baywatch ran on NBC for one season in 1989 before moving to syndication where it ran or an additional 10 seasons. The series went on to spinoff Baywatch Nights, and the original series was the most watched series in the world at one point thanks to international deals.
What makes this deal a bit of a puzzle is that Baywatch is not the only surf-based series in the works at Fox. Rescue: HI-Surf was initially supposed to debut in 2023, but it was pushed back to a Fall 2024 debut due to strike-related delays. Apparently, Fox sees a big future for surf-based action series at the moment. If audiences are in the mood for that, however, remains to be seen.
No word as of yet when Baywatch may debut.
