Some anniversaries are about celebration. Others are about closure. And then there is 1986.
Hasbro is officially marking the Transformers: The Movie 40th anniversary with what it is calling a year-long “Apology Tour.” Yes, really. Because four decades later, fans are still not over what happened to Optimus Prime in theaters.
When The Transformers: The Movie debuted in 1986, it did not just raise the stakes for animated storytelling. It blindsided an entire generation. Autobots and Decepticons clashed in a war that felt bigger than the small screen had ever allowed, and in one unforgettable moment, Optimus Prime fell in battle against Megatron. For a lot of kids, that was the first time a hero did not get back up.
Forty years later, Hasbro is leaning into that shared emotional scar with humor and affection. The “1986 Apology Tour” will bring special fan events and screenings throughout the year, inviting fans to grieve, reminisce, and, presumably, stock up on tissues. Details are still forthcoming, but the tone is clear. They know exactly what they did.
A milestone movie that still hits
The original animated feature boasted an all-star voice cast that still reads like a genre hall of fame. Peter Cullen gave Optimus Prime his steady gravitas. Frank Welker returned as Megatron. Orson Welles voiced the planet-eating Unicron. Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, Eric Idle, and Robert Stack rounded out a lineup that made the movie feel bigger than a Saturday morning cartoon ever had.
Over the years, The Transformers: The Movie has only grown in stature thanks to home video releases, revival screenings, and parents carefully introducing it to their own kids with a gentle warning about what is coming.
The 40th anniversary toy lineup

Hasbro
No anniversary would be complete without new collectibles, and Hasbro is making sure this one lands properly. The Transformers The Movie 40th anniversary lineup includes, for the first time ever, a premium electronic replica of the Matrix of Leadership. If you ever wanted to hold the fate of Cybertron in your hands, this is your moment.
The Studio Series line is also expanding with figures inspired by the film, including Shockwave, Skywarp, Wheeljack, Kranix, Sunstreaker, Astrotrain, and Snarl. Previously revealed figures based on Optimus Prime, Megatron, Hot Rod, Hound, and Scourge are also part of the broader anniversary wave. Additional reveals are planned throughout the year.
Hasbro Pulse will host a livestream on February 15 to walk fans through the full lineup and tease a few surprises. Pre-orders officially go live on February 16 and 17.
More than just toys
The celebration extends beyond action figures. Hasbro and its partners are rolling out a range of licensing and publishing products tied to the Transformers The Movie 40th anniversary. Brands including Culture Fly, Jada Toys, Monogram, ShuShu Papa, Skybound Entertainment, Super7, Threezero, and Trends International are all contributing to the lineup, with more details expected soon.
Still not over it
Hasbro’s Alyse D’Antuono called the film a defining moment for the franchise, acknowledging the emotional impact of Optimus Prime’s passing and the loyalty fans have shown for four decades. That loyalty is real. So is the lingering shock of 1986.
The “Apology Tour” might be tongue-in-cheek, but it works because everyone understands the joke. The Transformers: The Movie did not just sell toys. It left a mark. And forty years later, fans are still feeling it.
Bottom line
The Transformers: The Movie 40th anniversary is not just another retro celebration. It is a full embrace of one of the most talked-about moments in animated film history. With new collectibles, fan events, and a knowing nod to the trauma of 1986, Hasbro is proving that some stories, and some losses, never really fade.
