Hellbreak Trading Card Game Set for Fall 2026 Launch

Spin Master is stepping into a different corner of the hobby market this fall with the announcement of Hellbreak, a new horror-themed trading card game created in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences and tabletop design studio Ghost Galaxy. The game brings together some of the most recognizable monsters in cinema and drops them into a competitive arena built specifically for the trading card game audience.

The premise behind Hellbreak is what the designers call a “Monster Sandbox,” essentially a battlefield where horror icons face off against each other in fast, highly collectible gameplay. The first card set draws heavily from Universal’s deep catalog of horror characters, ranging from the classic Universal Monsters to later genre icons that helped define modern horror.

That Universal connection is more than just branding. It serves as the foundation for the entire game universe. Spin Master says the plan is to expand Hellbreak beyond that initial roster, bringing additional studios and their horror characters into the mix over time. In other words, the long-term vision looks less like a single licensed card set and more like a crossover horror ecosystem.

Doug Wadleigh, President of Spin Master Toys, described the strategy as combining two fast-growing areas of fandom. “Hellbreak brings together two of the hottest trends – horror and TCGs,” he said. “With Universal Products & Experiences as our flagship partner, and other major studios soon to be announced, we’ve created an enticing property unlike anything the TCG category has ever seen.”

For players, the pitch centers on cinematic storytelling translated into tabletop mechanics. Christian T. Petersen, CEO of Ghost Galaxy and design lead on the project, said the team approached the game with a clear goal in mind: create matches that feel intense and memorable. “Hellbreak was designed to feel dangerous, cinematic, and endlessly replayable,” Petersen explained.

Ghost Galaxy’s involvement is notable. The studio was founded by Petersen, a longtime tabletop industry veteran with decades of experience designing and publishing games. Their background in competitive card design and player engagement suggests that Hellbreak is aiming to be more than a novelty licensed game.

The timing also makes sense. Trading card games are once again a hot category, driven by everything from competitive play communities to collectors chasing rare pulls. At the same time, horror as a genre has been enjoying a sustained resurgence across film, streaming, and gaming. Hellbreak sits squarely in the overlap between those two trends.

Spin Master has not yet revealed detailed gameplay mechanics, faction structures, or collector tiers for the cards. Those elements, along with artwork and additional monster lineups, will be unveiled throughout the year leading up to launch.

The company has confirmed that Hellbreak is scheduled for a global release in Fall 2026, positioning it as a major new entry into the trading card game market and a potential long-term platform for horror crossovers.

Bottom line

Licensed trading card games come and go, but the ones that stick usually combine a strong theme with solid gameplay design. Hellbreak has the advantage of both a deep horror library and an experienced tabletop team behind it. If Spin Master and Ghost Galaxy can deliver on the promise of a cinematic monster battle arena, this could become one of the more interesting new entries in the TCG space when it arrives later this year.
