Sailor Moon has found her way to the United States with the new 2.5D Musical production. 2.5D is a term coined in Japan, and overseen by the Japan 2.5-Dimensional Musical Association, that brings the 2-dimensional manga, anime, and video games to live stage performances. They are defined by their costuming and make-up, combined, typically, with exaggerated expressions to convey them as they appear in the 2-dimensional originals, Satomi Toma, the choreographer of the production, and

The Nerdy attended a virtual press junket on Friday with Satomi Toma, the choreographer of the production, Riko Tanaka, who is playing Usagi/Sailor Moon, and Makoto Matsuda, Lead producer of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Super Live, and Founding Chairman of The Japan 2.5 Dimensional Musical Association,

Tanaka shared her deep connection to the Sailor Moon character, having grown up watching the series. Despite her age, she had discovered the series around the age of 3 or 4, and enjoyed it via video rentals. She expressed the honor and responsibility of playing such an iconic role, but admitted as a child she gravitated to playing as Sailor Jupiter.

Matsuda explained the concept of 2.5D musicals, and how they bridge the gap between 2D animation, manga, and video games and 3D live performance. He emphasized how the ‘Super Live’ format incorporates additional elements beyond traditional musicals, including advanced technology and projections.

Toma discussed her approach to choreography, focusing on creating visually appealing movements while considering practical limitations like costumes and safety. As she pointed out, she is mindful the actresses are in heels, and it is a constant consideration for her. She also emphasized the importance of making the fight scenes realistic and aesthetically pleasing.
