The Disneyland Resort is going to be getting a major expansion that is scheduled to take 40 years to complete.

After a marathon eight-hour meeting on Tuesday night, extending into Wednesday morning, the Anaheim City Council gave initial approval to what is being called Disneyland Forward. The new plan will see Disney paying $40M dollars to take over three city streets in and around current Disney properties, that will allow for the expansion to become one large park.

The new Disneyland Forward plans call for multiple new attractions, including areas based on Frozen, Tangled, Zootopia, Peter Pan, and more. There will also be an expansion of the number of hotel properties making Disneyland into more of a destination than it has been previously.

For those familiar with Disneyland as it currently exists, this new area would be across Disneyland Drive where the Disneyland Hotel currently sits. The Toy Story Parking lot would also be involved with a new parking structure built at another location.

The vote passed with a unanimous vote of 7-0. There will be another vote in May that is viewed as more of a formality, and that will be followed by a 30-day review. No timeline has been announced as of yet as to when ground will actually be broken on the project. Disneyland will be celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2025, and that feels like the perfect time to officially get this project underway.
