According to a new report, Sony Pictures is going to close the door on its Spider-Man spinoff films with Kraven the Hunter.

Sony has not had as much success with its Spider-Man spinoff films as it may have once hoped. As films such as Morbius and Madame Web failed to connect with audiences, it has become pretty clear that unless your name is “Venom,” this formula simply wasn’t working.

The Wrap is reporting that Sony Pictures is indeed closing this door for the time being. It will continue to work on projects such as a fourth Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and the upcoming Spider-Noir TV series, but beyond those, it’s going to sit back on the universe it was building.

There are enough projects going on that will allow Sony Pictures to retain its claim to the rights of the character, and will allow it to stop gambiling so much money on a string of box office disappointments.

Perhaps one day the studio will try again to plumb the depths of the massive ammount of characters it holds the rights to, but, for now, it’s time to take a break and reassess its position.
