Ghost is a word game where players take turns adding letters to a growing word fragment while trying not to complete a real word. The goal is to avoid being the player who finishes a valid word while also challenging other players who may be bluffing. The game is simple to learn and works well for groups, classrooms, and family gatherings. Here is how to play.
Materials You Need
- No materials required
- Two or more players seated in a circle
Basic Setup
Players sit in a circle so everyone can hear each letter clearly.
Choose one player to go first. Play proceeds clockwise.
How the Game Works
Building the Word Fragment
The first player says any letter out loud. This begins the word fragment.
On each turn, the next player adds one letter to the end of the fragment.
Letters must always be added in order. Players may not rearrange or skip letters.
Valid Plays
Each added letter must keep the fragment capable of becoming a real word that is at least four letters long.
Proper nouns, abbreviations, and hyphenated words are not allowed.
Completing a Word
If a player completes a valid word of four or more letters on their turn, that player loses the round.
Words may be plural if they are standard dictionary entries.
Challenging a Player
Instead of adding a letter, a player may challenge the previous player if they believe the fragment cannot be completed into a valid word.
When a challenge is made:
- If the challenged player can name a valid word that fits the fragment, the challenger loses the round.
- If the challenged player cannot name a valid word, the challenged player loses the round.
Scoring

Gemini
Each time a player loses a round, they receive the next letter in the word GHOST.
Players spell out GHOST one letter at a time. When a player completes the word GHOST, they are eliminated from the game.
The last remaining player wins.
Important Rules to Remember
- Words must be at least four letters long.
- Only real dictionary words are allowed.
- Players may challenge instead of adding a letter.
- Challenges must be made immediately on a player’s turn.
Optional Variations
- Increase the minimum word length for more difficulty.
- Use a shared dictionary agreed upon before playing.
- Play without eliminations and track losses instead.
- Use a whiteboard to display the current fragment.
Tips for Playing Ghost
- Think several letters ahead before making a play.
- Watch for traps where no valid word exists.
- Challenge confidently when the fragment feels impossible.
- Avoid obvious common words early in the game.
- Keep the pace quick to maintain energy.
