Capture the Flag is a classic outdoor team game built around strategy, speed, and teamwork. Two teams try to capture the opposing team’s flag and return it to their own side without being tagged. It works well for large groups, open spaces, and summer activities. Here is how to play.
Materials You Need
- Two flags or markers, one for each team
- An open outdoor space with clear boundaries
- Ten or more players divided into two teams
Setting Up the Field

Divide the playing area into two equal halves. Each half belongs to one team.
Place one flag in each team’s territory. Flags should be visible but not too easy to grab. Many groups place them near the back of their side.
Establish a clear boundary line between the two sides.
How the Game Works
Objective
The goal is to enter the opposing team’s territory, grab their flag, and return it safely to your own side.
Crossing Into Enemy Territory
When you enter the opposing team’s side, you are at risk of being tagged.
If you are tagged while on the opposing side, you are sent to jail.
Jail Rules
Each team designates a jail area within their territory.
Players who are tagged must go to the opposing team’s jail and remain there.
A teammate may rescue jailed players by reaching them and tagging them. Once freed, both players receive a free walk back to their own side.
Capturing the Flag
If a player reaches the opposing flag, they may pick it up and attempt to return it to their side.
If the player carrying the flag is tagged, the flag is returned to its original position, and the player goes to jail.
Winning the Game
A team wins by successfully bringing the opposing team’s flag back to their own side.
Important Rules to Remember
- You can only be tagged while on the opposing team’s side.
- Players in jail must remain there until freed.
- The flag must be carried by hand and cannot be thrown.
- Boundaries should be respected at all times.
Optional Variations
- Use multiple flags for faster gameplay.
- Allow tagged players to return without jail for shorter rounds.
- Play at night with glow sticks for added challenge.
- Use a time limit and declare a winner based on captures.
Best Age Range
Capture the Flag works best for ages 8 and up. Younger players can participate with simplified rules and smaller play areas.
