I really enjoyed Gen V season 1, and was anxious for the second outing. Sadly, things aren’t quite as smooth this time around.
Let’s be clear from the jump, I have to give them credit for dealing with the passing of Chance Pardomo so close to filming. The season needed to be reworked to remove him, and that is sure to have impacted some story beats. I will say, without giving anything away, that Andre is written out in a very logical and fitting manner. It is addressed very early on and has a clear impact on all of the characters throughout the season.
That aside, this season is just not as good as season 1.
The series picks up following closely after the events of The Boys season 4. Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) is still on the run, but circumstances quickly bring her back into contact with Emma (Lizzie Broadway), Cate (Maddie Phillips), and Jordan (Derek Luh/London Thor). From there they are off to solve the mystery of the new dean of the school, and it’s a doozy.
And let me just give huge props to Hamish Linklater as Cipher. He is hands-down the best part of the season and turns in a fantastic performance. And when his secret is revealed, his performance gets even better. Really a great new addition to the universe.
That being said, the season’s place in the overall universe is questionable at best. It doesn’t seem to truly propel the universe forward like season 1 did, and more treads water than forging any new paths. I still enjoyed it, but I didn’t find myself anxiously clicking on each episode the way I did before.
Is this due in part to the changes that were made? I truly doubt it. I don’t feel the overall season changed that much, just some of the finer details did.
This season tries to get going, but it just never feels as though it is really to get out of first gear.
SCORE: 7 out of 10
