It has been an open secret for some time now that Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton both tested for the new Lara Croft series. Reports came in late last year that Turner had pulled into the lead and was then negotiating for the part. It’s unclear why the announcement took so long, but it finally became official on Wednesday.

“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” said creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag). “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming.”

The series is being headed up by Waller-Bridge and produced by Amazon MGM Studios. “Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement last May when the series was picked up by the streaming service.

Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins will serve as executive producers via the Wells Street Productions banner, while Dmitri M. Johnson from dj2 Entertainment, Michael Scheel, Legendary Television, and Crystal Dynamics will also receive executive producing credits.

No word as of yet as to when the series will go into production, but it appears to be a high priority for Amazon MGM Studios.
