Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: James Gunn shares first glimpse of finished script

According to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, the script for the third movie is now finished. Gunn revealed the news on Twitter, saying, “Every bit of my heart.” No details for the movie are known at this point, but seeing that the script is done means Marvel is moving full steam ahead for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Potential spoilers ahead

The big question right now is who will appear in the movie, as nearly everyone one the Guardians team were turned to dust in Avengers: Infinity War. Add in the fact that Gamora died when she was sacrificed by Thanos to obtain the Soul Stone, and you have a much smaller cast of characters.

Chances are some (if not all) of the Guardians will reappear in Avengers 4, allowing them to finish out the trilogy the following year. But we have no clue at this point how this will play out. Judging by Gunn’s comments, this film is deeply personal to him, though I suppose that doesn’t provide much insight into what the movie will be about.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently scheduled for a 2020 release, so Gunn’s script is likely just an early draft. Whatever is contained within the pages could be changed between now and when filming gets underway next year. Either way, the movie will be an important part of Marvel’s Phase 4 as the studio goes beyond Iron Man, Captain America, and the original Avengers team.

Before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters, Marvel Studios will release Captain Marvel (March 8, 2019), Avengers 4 (May 3, 2019), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5, 2019).
